Why is the law so important and how has it helped develop history? Some people may view the law in a way that makes them believe that it holds them back; but it actually gives them freedom. There has to be some hierarchical system that determines the ethics of the society.
In the Bible that hierarchical character is God. He is in charge and sovereign, and man is under Him. Man is His steward who takes care of all of His creation. God sets the standards for living and we choose to either follow them or set our own standards for our lives. The Bible clearly states that those who choose their own paths ultimately lead to destruction and they will perish; “For the righteous will inherit the earth.”
Proverbs 10:7: The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.
Ezekiel 3:19: “Yet if you warned the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered yourself.
Also, those who lead morally unrighteous lives and do not follow the pathway of ethics that God has laid down for us are never satisfied with themselves. They always want to do more and more wrong. They also have a longing for something more, and their lives feel empty. The righteous have lives that are filled up and complete, while the wicked never do.
Proverbs 11:18: The wicked man earns an empty wage, but the one who sows righteousness, a true reward.
Without the laws of ethics, the world would be chaotic. There would be no moral or ethical standard for living. We would have an ethical breakdown in our every-day lives; more violence and crime would spring up as a result. Can you imagine a place without any law or order whatsoever? This would not result in freedom, rather fear for the future.
Law and ethics don’t hold men back, it gives them freedom to do what they want (within the boundaries of law and order) without fear of what others might do to them, or fear of the uncertainty of the future.
What about role models? Everybody has at least one person who they look up to in life. It isn’t always someone who has personally impacted their life; but a lot of times it is someone in history who we admire and aspire to be like. Without the role of ethics in shaping past societies and cultures there wouldn’t be any one to admire. All of those people that we read about in our history books might not have done the same things without the help of God and His rules of ethics.
The Bible is a great tool that helps shape humanity in how we view ethics. Without it, a lot of important historical figures wouldn’t be important anymore. And those we look to now for leadership wouldn’t have anyone to guide them on how to be a good role model.
Where would we be today without law and ethics? It is a somber question to ponder. I believe that without them, our world would be vastly different.
